WARM, FUZZY FEELINGS PART 2: P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

PS I Still Love You is the sequel to the funny, romantic, and sweet To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, so there’s no way that I could not love it. As an individual book, though, I did not enjoy P.S. I Still Love You as much as I did To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Had it not been part of the To All The Boys series, I am not sure this review would have been a positive one.

One reason why P.S. I Still Love You is, in my opinion, not as strong as To All The Boys is because the characters aren’t as thoroughly developed. Since To All The Boys is the first book of the series, Jenny Han needed to build up the characters — not doing so simply wasn’t an option, But, because P.S. I Still Love You readers already are familiar with the characters, Han almost completely stopped developing her characters, which made me feel detached from them. They didn’t feel the same connection that I had felt with them in To All The Boys.

In general, the plot of P.S. I Still Love You also is weaker than that of To All The Boys.  While the plot of To All The Boys is a bit clichéd but nevertheless sweet, well-executed, and clear, I felt that the plot of P.S. I Still Love You was not as apparent; the story seemed to wander, and everything that Han wrote did not seem as deliberate as in To All The Boys.

However, despite the weak character development and plot, I still loved P.S. I Still Love You.  Maybe part of the reason why I loved it so much was simply because of its connection to To All The Boys, of which I had fond memories. But, even if that is the case, maybe that isn’t such a bad thing. Any series has its fair share of highs and lows, and I’m willing to read the lows if it means also read the highs. That’s why, even though I didn’t love P.S. I Still Love You as much as To All The Boys,  I cannot wait to read the third and final novel of the series: Always and Forever, Lara Jean.
