Well, it’s finally happened. I finished the To All The Boys series, and I won’t lie: I miss it already!
Always and Forever, Lara Jean is my favorite book in the To All The Boys series. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is where Lara Jean’s sweet, funny, romantic story began and P.S. I Still Love You kept the love alive, but it isn’t until Always and Forever, Lara Jean that Lara Jean’s story truly comes full circle.
To All The Boys opens with Lara Jean was learning to cope with her sister Margot having left for college. The story continues from there, focusing in on Lara Jean’s crazy love life. By the end of Always and Forever, Lara Jean, however, the storm has settled. It’s now Lara Jean’s time to head to college. Something about this progression — from Margot’s departure to Lara Jean’s — is so satisfying. It brings the closure that I needed after three whole books of becoming attached to Lara Jean as a character.
Not to mention the characters in Always and Forever, Lara Jean! I mentioned in earlier reviews that while I loved the character development in To All The Boys, it fell short in P.S. I Still Love You. Well, Jenny Han certainly upped her game in Always and Forever, Lara Jean. What especially stood out to me in this book was the relationships between the characters. They all feel so real and natural. A few of my favorites are:
- The Song sisters
- Kitty and Mrs. Rothschild
- Kitty and Peter (I think this one is my favorite!)
- Lara Jean and her passed mother, who she continues to hold close to her heart
- … and, of course, Lara Jean and Peter.
It’s interesting to think about what the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before series would have been like without its final book — in fact, Han initially didn’t plan on writing Always and Forever, Lara Jean. I, for one, am extremely glad that she did. It wraps up Lara Jean’s high school years beautifully and brings closure, and yet that lingering feeling of warmth that makes part of me wish her story had continued. I hope you love Lara Jean’s story as much as I did.
